How Print Pricing Works: What You Are Actually Paying For
Print quotes can feel like a black box. They are not — every price is built from a handful of clear ingredients. Here is what goes into yours.
The building blocks of a quote
- Stock (paper) — charged per sheet. Heavier or specialty stock costs more.
- Printing — on digital this is a “click” charge per printed side, per sheet. Double-sided is two clicks.
- Setup / origination — a once-off to prepare artwork, impose and proof. This is why very small runs feel pricey per unit.
- Finishing — cutting, creasing, laminating, binding, rounding corners. Some is per job, some per unit.
- Mark-up — covers overheads and a fair margin.
- VAT — 15% on top, as required by SARS.
Why quantity changes the unit price so much
The setup cost is fixed whether you print 100 or 1 000. Spread over more units it shrinks per piece, which is why doubling the quantity rarely doubles the price. There is real value in ordering to your next sensible quantity.
